TEARS OF SYRIA

2015 - 2017

Specializing in the representation of war and coercive phenomena, Mathilde comes from theoretical training in history and art history. As an extension of her reflective approach, her plastic production questions the conditions of visibility and demonstrations of situations of violence.

Through research linking aesthetics to theory, this work attempts to bring out a critical look at war and its images. Mathilde specializes in the conflict that has been unfolding in Syria since 2011. Crossing different mediums, she almost exclusively addresses videos from this context posted on Youtube by actors in the field.

This diverse corpus ranges from civilian, military, state, jihadist and Russian footage. Highly codified, these new forms of digital speaking present themselves as a vast theoretical and artistic field allowing direct access to war.
