BLACK SITES
2017

THE FRUIT OF A LONG-TERM INVESTIGATION, “BLACK SITES” IS ABOUT THE SECRET CENTERS OF DETENTION AND TORTURE FOR POLITICAL OPPONENTS OF THE CURRENT SYRIAN REGIME.

THE PROJECT.

Marked by the violence and the diversity of the abuses inflicted there, these “Black Sites” form invisible jails inscribed in the heart of Syria. Between disembodied landscapes and densely populated urban spaces, the locations identified are organized between military branches and state prisons. Initiated from the aerial visualization software Google Earth, this video offers a topographical investigation of the “Black Sites”. Of military origin, this software is characterized by mechanical and automated shooting which is reminiscent of Harun Farocki's "operative images". Referring to a dehumanized vision freed from all aesthetics, the shots that make up “Black Sites” attempt to reverse the coercive logic usually associated with these images, and try to turn against the invisibility characteristic of these places.

Questioning as much their probative force as their opacity, “Black Sites” presents the visual hollow as a tool allowing the development of an active thought on the representation of violence. Symbolically marked by the black area which is applied to the architecture of the place, the hollow of the image is formed by the sound universe which appeals to the imagining consciousness of the observer. Unique to each city, this atmosphere is suspended in favor of a stopped time in which the only perceptible sounds attempt to account for the torture methods used.
