PIXEL ARCHAEOLOGY
2017
MADE FROM THE WORK OF EYAL WEIZMAN AND THE FORENSIC ARCHITECTURE GROUP, THIS VIDEO EXPLORES VISUAL MARKS OF WAR AND DESTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS AS EVEN MATERIALS TO BE TESTIMONIALS.
THE PROJECT
In the context of the Syrian armed conflict, victims have chosen to testify by filming their destroyed homes and posting these videos on Youtube. “Pixel Archeology” attempts to question these wanderings as a means of accessing a new imagery of war. Between formal illegibility and the need to "make an image", their digital immateriality is constantly replayed by the click of a computer mouse. Situated on the borderline of voyeurism and technical indifference, the technical device attempts to make the observer question the status of these images. As much evidence of destruction as blurry images without legal weight, these videos raise the question of their impact on reality.
