MADE FROM CAMERAS ON BOARD A RUSSIAN MILITARY AIRCRAFT DURING AIR RAIDS IN SYRIA, “SENTINEL” EXPLORES THE MECHANICAL AND UNDIFFERENTIATED VISION OF OPERATING IMAGES.
THE PROJECT.
From a website of the Russian Defense Ministry, these images taken without an operator present themselves as a "sight without gaze" in which humans are reduced to the rank of pixels. Characterized by their technical and autonomous shooting, these images are presented in a regular and throbbing movement that questions their coercive status. Instruments of technical and theoretical domination, these aerial views reflect the asymmetry of the balance of power on the Syrian ground.
Presented in a loop with the only sound universe being the click of a computer mouse, “Sentinel” attempts to place the observer in front of the conditions of production and visibility of these images. Like a video game, the viewer is invited to question the derealization of the world carried by these images.
